Project details

This project delivered a new four arm roundabout to replace the notorious Hempnall Crossroads.

The project aimed to improve road safety at this busy junction where traffic crosses the A140 near Hempnall. Additionally, it sought to, ease congestion, and reduce journey times. The scheme, together with Long Stratton Bypass, provides infrastructure improvements required to support development at Long Stratton.

Funding of £3.05m came from the Department for Transport with a further £650,000 from New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership's Growth Deal with central Government. The remainder was financed by the Greater Norwich Growth Board (GNGB) using CIL, and Norfolk County Council.

The GNGB supported this project because of its strategic importance, and widespread community support. Improvements at the junction were essential to help unlock the building of 1,800 houses at Long Stratton. Additionally, the existing junction was dangerous, with 8 accidents over a period of 5 years. An informal public consultation on the project plan, that ran in March and April 2018, showed overwhelming support for the scheme by local residents.
